Sowing the seeds

Sowing the seeds

The story of Semula started rooting in late 2019 for a womenswear capsule that would reflect the spirit of the Malay Nusantara and our Southeast Asian heritage. This region's traditional wear has long been regarded in the 20th century as occasion wear, reserved for momentous milestones.

But we wanted to push that notion a little more. What if we did not relinquish the kebaya to mere occasional instances? What if it could be designed into our everyday in a way that complements our daily activities, and what if it could be worn and enjoyed by any woman?

The archipelago has always been rich in cultural exchange, and that remains the same today.

The Crop Top

The Crop Top

Inspired by the simple elegance of the kebaya, our crop top features a classic stand collar design and elegant curved neckline. Its vertical stitch line down the front is reminisce of the Kebaya Kartini, sans buttons and brooches.

A modern crop length ends just below the waistline, providing coverage for comfort and style.

The Wrap Blouse

The Wrap Blouse

A wrap will always be classic.

While its silhouette is similar to the crop top, the wrap blouse has adjustable ties. This affirms one of our pillars to make clothing that can grow with you. As our bodies change with time, the wrap blouse is a friend that makes room for change too.

We look forward to grading this design in more sizes in good time.

The Batik Co-ords

The Batik Co-ords

Traditional Southeast Asian attire are known for their modest elegance. The batik co-ords mirror these values, and consist of separates — fitted culottes and an easy-wearing top that go just as well together as they do on their own.

The overall silhouette remains clean and minimal, fitting seamlessly into our everyday.

These co-ords are also the first designs that carry our new size charts, which we hope to share more in the coming weeks.
